As for stating the request for progressive stages of practice: because Samantabhadra's question was abstruse and deep, the Tathāgata answered in accordance with principle, first wishing to eliminate mental afflictions and then cultivate all myriad practices together. Some, hearing what was said before—that knowing illusion is itself departure, without employing expedients and also without progressive stages—might claim that knowing it is enough and no practice is needed at all. Samantacakṣu, wishing to make the doctrinal teaching complete, requested the gateway to undertaking practice. Therefore the Buddha instructed them to keep the precepts, sit in tranquil meditation, constantly maintain this reflection, and so forth, proceeding step by step until the practice of contemplation is perfected.
