"You should know, Viśeṣamati,
that the mind of unsurpassable great enlightenment
is fundamentally without dual marks;
yet in accordance with various expedients,
their numbers are limitless.
When the Tathāgata reveals them in summary,
there are three kinds:
quiescent śamatha,
like a mirror reflecting images;
illusory-like samāpatti,
like a sprout gradually growing;
dhyāna is only quiescence,
like the ringing within that vessel.
These three wondrous approaches to the Dharma
are all accordance with enlightenment.
The Tathāgatas of the ten directions
and the great bodhisattvas
attain the Way by means of them;
because the three matters are perfectly realized,
it is called ultimate nirvāṇa."
