As for the fifty-seventh, “What is the ocean-like mind? It refers to constantly enjoying one's own body in this manner and abiding [therein]”: For example, the great ocean receives the hundred rivers and swallows them without limit. This mind is also like this: it appropriates all superior matters to itself, thinking with contempt that other people have none to compare, and constantly maintains such numerous advantages for itself, enjoying them and abiding [therein]. The previous mind sought height, while this mind seeks breadth; hence it is said to be equal to the ocean. Once practitioners have recognized this, they should reflect that the ocean of immeasurable great merits of the three stages of worthies and ten stages of nobles becomes progressively deep and vast, whereas their own mind and practice have not even attained a speck of dust or a drop of water from it, and they should not give rise to the mind of great pride.
