3.41

經云「若弟子具如是相貌者，阿闍梨應自往勸發如是告言」者，此有二義：一則除弟子疑心故，但恐無智疑悔則為永失，是以不妄與人，必是可傳。自當求而授與，不俟來請也。二為除阿闍梨悋心故，乃至無間火聚中，有可流通亦當往赴，況遇良緣求而不惠耶？

The sūtra says: "If a disciple is endowed with such characteristics, the ācārya should personally go and exhort him, speaking thus": this has two meanings: first, to remove the disciple's doubtful mind, fearing only that ignorance and doubt would lead to permanent loss; therefore, [the ācārya] does not give it to people recklessly, but if someone is definitely qualified for transmission, he should personally seek him out and bestow it upon him, without waiting for him to come and ask. Second, to remove the ācārya's stinginess: even into a mass of fire in the Avīci [hell], if there is someone to whom it can be circulated, he should go; how much more so when encountering good conditions, should one seek yet not bestow it?
