The sūtra says: “Or consciousness.” This refers to a class that clings to this consciousness as pervading all places, even up to the realms of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, with consciousness filling them completely. This too is not correct. If the conscious spirit were pervasive and eternal, it ought to be able to see, hear, sense, and know on its own. Yet now consciousness only arises through the combination of sense faculties and sense objects; thus your conscious spirit is useless. Furthermore, if the conscious spirit pervades the five destinies, how could there be death and birth? Therefore one knows it is not so.
