The sūtra says: “Ālaya.” It has the meaning of holding and storing, and also the meaning of a dwelling. This school says there is an ālaya capable of holding this body, performing actions, and storing the myriad forms; when condensed, it is non-existent, and when expanded, it fills the world. It is not the same as the meaning of the eighth consciousness in the Buddha-Dharma. However, the Bhagavat with hidden intention spoke of the tathāgatagarbha as the ālaya; if people within the Buddha-Dharma do not contemplate the true nature of their own mind, but discriminate and cling, this is also identical to the view of self.
