"The four dhyānas, the four formless attainments, and the cessation of feeling and perception are called the nine samādhis. They are collectively called 'successive' because when entering dhyāna, one's wisdom is deep and sharp, able to enter one dhyāna from another, thought continuing upon thought, without any divergent thoughts intermingling. Now, cultivating these samādhis can bring about the outflow-free state; that it now says they do not attain the exhaustion of outflows refers generally to the worldly cultivation of the desire realm, the unarrived [concentration], and the four dhyānas and four formless absorptions with an outflow-tainted mind. When ordinary beings cultivate dhyāna, they mostly generate taste and attachment, experiencing fruits in accord with dhyāna without transcending the three realms; hence they are not outflow-free. It does not specifically refer to the nine such as cessation; or alternatively, it may specifically rebuke the preceding nine samādhis: though they are accessible to the outflow-free, all are not ultimate."
