"Speaking of food without becoming full is an analogy. The preceding was the doctrine, the latter the analogy; joining them, it can be understood. One who cultivates must inwardly cultivate the contemplation of principle and outwardly aid it with much learning, like a person who has eyes under the bright light of the sun, seeing various forms. If one is biased toward the written word and does not practice the gate of contemplation, how is that different from speaking of food? Therefore, the Great Treatise says: 'Having wisdom without much learning means one does not know the true mark, just like in great darkness having eyes but seeing nothing; having much learning without wisdom also means one does not know the true mark, just like in great brightness having a lamp but having no eyes. Much learning with sharp wisdom is what should be accepted when spoken; having neither learning nor wisdom is like an ox in a human body.'"
