"Calamity" (nie) means disaster. When the aggregate of perception was not yet exhausted, it still invited external māras; now, with the aggregate of perception exhausted, the aggregate of formations is clearly exposed; but concerning the states perceived, he gives rise to distinct, deviant views and clings to these as correct; hence they are called "māras of the mind". Therefore, causing them to awaken and investigate, skillfully calming [these errors], they do not lose correct view and can reach the unexcelled; hence [the Buddha] deeply entrusts it, to transmit and display it, so that practitioners will not enter the net of deviance and lose the path to correct awakening. "Forks in the road" means deviant paths.
