The first three sentences identify the person; from "the nature of all worlds" downward directly explains the exhaustion of formations. "Nature of the world": the aggregate of formations is precisely the essential nature of the world. "World" has three meanings: first, it has arising and ceasing; second, its nature is defiled; third, it can be destroyed. Since it falls within the world, all share the arising and ceasing of the aggregate of formations as their nature. Being hidden and secret, it is "subtle"; being separated from perception, it is "clear"; "stirring" means moving. "Shared dynamic of life": previously it was the fundamental basis, now it is the vital mechanism; suddenly it is broken, hence it is said: "suddenly crumbles and tears apart". From "the deep, subtle" downward re-explains the meaning of exhaustion. The large rope on a net is called gang; the knot at the collar of a garment is called niu; both metaphorize the essential points. The twelve classes of living beings are like a net and like garments; the aggregate of formations runs through and connects their subtle knots and essentials, like the main rope and the collar-knot. Pudgala means "repeatedly grasping destinies", which refers generally to the twelve classes. Because the aggregate of formations can sustain this kind of birth, it is called "the deep, subtle guiding thread"; the guiding thread is the karmic cause, and the pudgala is the karmic retribution. When the karmic cause has perished, what would lead to the result? When the karmic retribution has ceased, what would serve as that which repays? Since cause and result have both perished, resonance is severed. "Profound pulse" also metaphorizes the hidden depth of the aggregate of formations.
