As śamatha and vipaśyanā grow superior, thought-concepts do not arise; hence it is said, "keep their correct minds concentrated and bright." Because passionate craving in the desire realm does not arise, it is said that the māras find no advantage against them. Here they infer and exhaustively probe the origin of the categories of living beings, finding only the single aggregate of volitional formations, hidden and clear, to be the source of all arising and ceasing. Now that it is laid bare, with no other origin of sentient beings besides this, they then cling to the idea that the world arose without a cause, because they do not know that the causal origins of good and evil and the differentiated seeds reside in the aggregate of consciousness. That is, the treatises of externalists arose on account of this. In all cases, when practitioners reach this point, deviant wisdom suddenly arises; this is called "the eruption of views," and not that there were distinct externalists originally.
