Question: Illusory appearances are unreal and completely devoid of substance; how can it be said again that 'their nature is truly the substance of wondrous, awakened brightness'? Answer: It is like flowers in space: they exist because one observes space with diseased eyes affected by cataracts; apart from space, there are no separate appearances of flowers. Although flowers in space have no self-nature, they take empty space as their underlying substance. If the cataract disease is cured, although the appearance of flowers ceases, the nature of space does not cease. The nature and appearances of all dharmas are also like this: although illusory appearances cease, the true nature does not stir.
