Because a person speaks of plums, and the plums do not speak, it does not arise from the plums. If because a person speaks, water then flows from the mouth, since the mouth flows with water, it ought to hear the speech; why use the ears to hear? If the mouth does not hear and only the ears hear, since the ears hear the speech, they also ought to flow with water; hence it says, 'why does this water not flow out from the ears?' The speaking cannot grasp the plums, and the plums do not reach the mouth. The ears of themselves hear the speech, but the water instead flows from the mouth. Both the speech of plums and the water are ungraspable.
