Refuting its being born from the wood. This refutes based on the visible, coarse manifestation of smoke, without discussing its aroma. If indicated by smoke, it indeed has not penetrated, hence it says: 'When that smoke rises into space, it has not yet reached far.' The smoke is still near, while the smelling has already penetrated far; therefore one knows that its fragrance does not emanate from the wood.
