初四句牒所計,次六句略破非和。若四大性自體非和,則不和諸大,如空與色礙、無礙異。若和下破和合,若大性體自是和合,即成生滅,始終即生滅也。生死下釋相,初句釋相成,次句釋相續,謂生能成死等,死能續生等,謂現在生續過去生也。如旋下二喻,初喻相續,次喻相成。如文。

The first four lines cite what was posited; the next six lines briefly refute non-combination. If the nature of the four elements were in its own essence uncombined, it would not combine with the other elements, just as space and form differ in being obstructive or unobstructive. From 'If it is combined' onward refutes combination: if the nature of the elements were in essence combined, it would become arising and cessation; 'beginning and end' means arising and cessation. From 'birth and death' onward explains the characteristics: the first phrase explains mutual production, and the next phrase explains successive continuation—that is, life can produce death, etc., and death can continue life, etc., meaning present birth continues past birth. From 'like a whirling' onward are two similes: the first illustrates successive continuation, and the second illustrates mutual production. It is as in the text.
