「阿難！此見若復與明與暗及與虛空元一體者，則明與暗二體相亡，暗時無明、明時無暗；若與暗一，明則見亡；必一於明，暗時當滅，滅則云何見明、見暗？若明暗殊，見無生滅，一云何成？」

"Ānanda! If this seeing were originally one substance with light, darkness, and empty space, then the two substances of light and darkness would annihilate each other: when it is dark, there is no light, and when it is light, there is no darkness. If it is identical with darkness, seeing would perish with light; if it is necessarily identical with light, it should be extinguished at dark. Being extinguished, how could one see light and see darkness? If light and darkness are distinct, yet seeing has no arising or ceasing, how could identity be established?"
