4.343

若執因緣、自然取佛果者，雖經劫數勤苦修習，終莫能及，故云尚在遙遠。憶持妙理，分別不亡，繫念相續，但滋生死，不能無心忘照、反聞聞性，於無了知不辨真實。故《圓覺》云「種種取捨皆是輪迴，未出輪迴而辨圓覺，彼圓覺性即同流轉，若免輪迴無有是處。」故云秖益戲論。

If one clings to causes and conditions or spontaneity to grasp the fruit of Buddhahood, even through kalpas of diligent and arduous practice, one will ultimately never reach it; hence it is said, 'are still far away.' Remembering and retaining subtle principles, with discrimination uneliminated and continuous binding thoughts, only nurtures saṃsāra; one cannot, with a mind free of intention, forget illumination and turn the hearing back to the nature of hearing, failing to discern the genuine in the absence of knowing. Therefore, the *Perfect Enlightenment Sūtra* says: 'All kinds of taking and discarding are saṃsāra. Discerning perfect enlightenment without escaping saṃsāra, that nature of perfect enlightenment becomes identical to transmigration; if one seeks to escape saṃsāra, there is no such possibility.' Therefore it says, 'it only increases conceptual proliferation.'
