The discrimination of the six consciousnesses conditions the three periods of time universally: recollecting past objects, cognising present dusts, and reciting and habituating all kinds of future perceptual realms. The substance of the discriminating subject arises from the sensing and cognising of the preceding turbidity of views; the marks of the discriminated objects are the images manifested by the six dusts. Hence it is said that 'nature gives rise' and 'forms manifest'. 'Forms' means marks. Apart from dusts and apart from awareness, there are no marks and no nature; mutually intertwined and turbulently perfuming one another, it is called the turbidity of afflictions, which corresponds to the first four of the six coarse marks.
