佛問阿難：「汝云何聞？云何不聞？」阿難、大眾俱白佛言：「鍾聲若擊，則我得聞；擊久聲消，音響雙絕，則名無聞。」

The Buddha asked Ānanda: "Why do you hear? Why do you not hear?" Ānanda and the great assembly both said to the Buddha: "If the sound of the bell is struck, then I hear it; when the strike ceases and sound fades, with voice and echo both terminated, then it is called not hearing."
