4.588

擊鍾三問，審定稱聞，欲轉問宗，又令重釋。一則斥成矯亂，一則顯其性常，令知生滅之中有不生滅，不因聲滅、不因聲生，生滅圓離即常真實，斯則了然常住，何斷滅之有乎？

[The Buddha] struck the bell and asked three times to ascertain their assertion regarding "hearing," wishing to shift the topic of inquiry, and then ordered them to explain again. One [purpose] was to rebuke and establish their equivocation; the other was to reveal the constancy of its nature, making them know that within arising and ceasing there is that which neither arises nor ceases, which does not cease on account of sound, nor arise on account of sound; being completely free from arising and ceasing, it is constant and real. Thus, it is clearly ever-abiding—how could there be any annihilation?
