Fire blazes upward toward dryness, and water descends flowing toward moisture; interacting and striking against each other, they instantly form solid obstruction. Although fire blazes upward and they strike against each other, in the end it is conquered by water; therefore, the great oceans are vast while continents and islets are narrow. This is all because the false nature is impermanent, mutating from before to after: because the mind of craving is abundant, it forms the great oceans; because the mind of clinging is strong, it forms continents and islets. The nature of anger generates arrogance, the nature of clinging generates anger; giving rise to craving toward form produces flowing water on the islets; defying craving generates anger, producing fire in the ocean. Habitable land amidst water is called a continent (zhou); a sandbar amidst water is called an islet (tan).
