Kauṇḍinya is a clan name, which translates as 'fire-vessel'; his ancestors served fire, and from this the clan was named. As for the 'five monks', at first, when the Buddha abandoned his kingdom, entered the mountains, and practiced the Way, Śuddhodana ordered three relatives of the clan—first, Aśvajit; second, Bhadrika; third, Mahānāma-Kulika—and two maternal uncles—first, Kauṇḍinya; second, Daśabala-Kāśyapa—commanding them to follow and guard him. The five men took the command, but later each abandoned him and practiced heterodox ways together in the Deer Park. After the Buddha attained the fruit, he thought about whom to liberate: these five had previously guarded and served him, so he went and turned the wheel of the Dharma thrice for them, asking, 'Do you understand?' Kauṇḍinya was the first to answer that he had understood and known, and the devas in the sky also said he had understood; therefore the Buddha named him Ājñāta. Ājñāta translates as 'understanding' or 'already known'. Cock's Grove is the name of a monastery.
