Mahākāśyapa is translated as the Great Drinker of Light clan; his name was Pippala. His practice of ascetic virtues (dhūta) was foremost, and the assembly recognized him as unsurpassed. The nun Purple-Golden Light was his wife when he was a householder; their karmic origin is as usual. At the place of Sun Moon Lamp, he was able to draw near, hear the Dharma, and cultivate the practice.
