阿那律陀即從座起，頂禮佛足而白佛言：「我初出家，常樂睡眠，如來訶我為畜生類。我聞佛訶，啼泣自責，七日不眠，失其雙目。世尊示我樂見照明金剛三昧。」

Aniruddha immediately arose from his seat, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "When I first left the household life, I was constantly fond of sleeping. The Tathāgata reproached me as being of the animal kind. When I heard the Buddha's reproach, I wept and blamed myself, and for seven days did not sleep, losing both my eyes. The World-Honoured One instructed me in the joyful seeing, illuminated and luminous vajra-samādhi."
