Cūḍapanthaka is translated as 'Snake Slave', born on a road, or translated as 'Born on the Path'. He was by nature exceedingly dull. In the past he was a great Dharma master who thoroughly understood sūtras and treatises and had five hundred disciples, but he was stingy with the Buddha-Dharma and unwilling to teach others. Consequently he was born dull and dim. Due to past wholesome roots he encountered the Buddha and left the household life; five hundred monks together taught him a single verse, yet over ninety days he could not master it. To remedy his distraction, the Buddha taught him breath-counting.
