5.421

具云梅咀利曳那，此云慈氏。燈明佛時，妙光菩薩八百弟子中有一人，號曰求名，是此人也。心重世名多遊族姓者，蓋由心外見境，馳求不息，分別諸法種類名相，不知自心熏習所現，即是不了心及緣，則生二妄想也。為對治故，教唯識觀。

In full it is said *maitreya*; here it is translated as 'Benevolent One'. At the time of Pradīpa Buddha, among the eight hundred disciples of Bodhisattva Varaprabha there was one person called 'Seeking Fame'; this was the person. His mind being heavily attached to worldly fame and wandering much among clan families was because he saw objective realms outside the mind, pursued them unceasingly, and discriminated the categories, names, and characteristics of various dharmas, not knowing that they are what is manifested by the perfuming of his own mind; this is failing to understand the mind and conditions, which gives rise to two kinds of delusive thoughts. In order to remedy this, he was taught the contemplation of representation-only (vijñapti-mātra).
