An icchantika is one whose roots of goodness are severed. The offense of great falsehood is identical to this. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra, 'Chapter on the Heterodox and the Correct,' states: 'If anyone says, "I have already accomplished anuttara-bodhi. Why? Because I possess Buddha-nature, and one who possesses Buddha-nature will definitely accomplish anuttara-bodhi," you should know that this person commits a pārājika offense. Why? Although they possess Buddha-nature, because they have not cultivated the various skillful means, they have therefore not seen it. Because they have not seen it, they cannot achieve anuttara-bodhi.' Therefore, we know that those who do not briefly cultivate or sever anything, yet claim themselves to be Buddhas, all commit great falsehood, incur a pārājika, and are not disciples of the Buddha.
