Foul, pungent, and stinking filth does not accord with the sage's mind, so they do not protect them. The demons do not uphold the precepts, but cultivate wrong concentration and worldly blessings, thereby inducing birth in the demon palaces. By the power of their concentration and blessings, they temporarily accord with retribution in the next life; their karma of violating the prohibitions will be experienced only later, hence it is said 'when their blessings are exhausted, they fall into hell.'
