Fifth. The luminous teaching by which the Dharma King entrusts his governance is therefore called 'the verses of consecration.' 'All Bodhisattvas' and so forth have already been explained above. This establishes the name in terms of teaching and practice. The above five names answer the first question; 'you should respectfully uphold it' answers the next question. Simply practicing according to what has been said relying on the preceding five names, and transmitting them to later generations so that the multitude is brought to awakening, is precisely 'respectfully upholding.' The preceding clarified understanding, discriminated practice, led from cause to fruit, and revealed the distinctions among stages. Asking for the names and requesting to uphold it brought one period to a complete close; this, then, concluded one assembly, and it ought to have said that the great multitude, having heard what the Buddha said, bowed in reverence and departed. But Ānanda made a further request for benefit; although the times were separated, the questions were linked. Therefore, the compilers of the sūtra matched the questions according to their meaning to combine them into one text. For this reason, it does not conclude with bowing in reverence and departing.
