Obtaining true samādhi, it therefore says 'suddenly awakened to dhyāna.' Attaining [the fruit of] the sakṛdāgāmin, it therefore says 'advanced in practice in the noble stages.' Deeply realizing the truth of cessation, it therefore says 'supreme wondrous principle.' Gradually illuminating with wisdom, it therefore says 'mental deliberations became empty and stilled.' Being innate and difficult to eliminate, it therefore says 'subtle.' As for 'the six grades,' according to the Mahāyāna, although the innate afflictions of the nine grounds in the three realms are each divided into nine grades, if wisdom is predominant, upon entering the grounds they are permanently subdued and only severed upon [reaching] Buddhahood; if compassion is predominant, they are intentionally allowed to arise. If according to the Hīnayāna, the nine grounds are also each divided into nine grades, yet they are severed ground by ground across the four fruits: in the body of the first fruit, one severs the first six grades of delusions among the nine grades of the single ground of the desire realm, realizing the second fruit; in the body of the second fruit, one severs the lower three grades, realizing the third fruit; in the body of the third fruit, one severs the seventy-two grades of the upper two realms, thereby attaining the arhat. Here, realizing the second fruit, he therefore severed the six grades.
