Agreement and contrariety have two aspects: First, regarding emotion: all sentient beings love life and hate death; birth accords with emotion, while death opposes emotion. Thus it says: 'Birth follows habituated agreement, and death follows transforming reversal.' 'Transforming' is like 'contrary'. Furthermore, at conception, the three factors are all agreeable, and hence birth is obtained; in death, this is absent. Second, regarding karma: karma can bring about retribution. Birth accords with retribution, as the cause produces the fruit; hence it is called 'habituated agreement'. Death is the opposite of this, lacking the meaning of generation and growth; hence it is called 'transforming reversal'. At the juncture of birth and death, when wind and fire have not yet dispersed, the karmic actions of one's lifetime, the causes and conditions of good and evil, appear simultaneously at this moment. The stronger pulls first, and one immediately follows it to the place of rebirth.
