8.351

阿鼻，此云無間，即第八獄也，此具五種：謂受罪、苦具、身量、劫數、壽命也。若依《俱舍》，業報無間，以造此罪必墮地獄，更無餘業、餘生能間隔故。謗大乘下，諸罪最重，由是更生十方阿鼻。《法華》云「若謗此經，其人命終入阿鼻獄具足一劫，劫盡更生，如是展轉至無數劫。」《俱舍論》說「阿鼻地獄壽命中劫。」二十增減為一中劫。既言無數，此世界壞，即往十方阿鼻也。以謗法罪斷佛種故，令無量人墮邪見故。

Avīci is translated here as 'unremitting', which is the eighth hell. This possesses five aspects: namely, undergoing retribution, instruments of suffering, bodily size, duration of kalpas, and lifespan. According to the Abhidharmakośa, it is unremitting in karmic retribution because committing this offense results inevitably in falling into hell, with no other karma or rebirth that can intervene. From 'slandering the Mahāyāna' downward, these offenses are the most severe, so one is reborn into the Avīci hells of the ten directions. The Lotus Sūtra states: 'If anyone slanders this sūtra, that person at the end of life will enter the Avīci Hell for a full kalpa; when the kalpa ends, they will be reborn again, cycling thus for immeasurable kalpas.' The Abhidharmakośabhāṣya states: 'The lifespan in the Avīci Hell is an intermediate kalpa.' Twenty increases and decreases make one intermediate kalpa. Since it says 'immeasurable', when this world is destroyed, one goes to the Avīci hells of the ten directions. This is because the offense of slandering the Dharma severs the Buddha-seed and causes immeasurable people to fall into wrong views.
