"Third is the habit of conceit, mutually encroaching, arising from reliance on oneself [over others], surging and flowing without cessation. Thus, there are surges, rushings, and waves, accumulating waves to form water. Just as when a person's mouth and tongue taste one another, water thereby emerges. As the two habits stimulate each other, there are thus events such as rivers of blood, rivers of ashes, boiling sands, oceans of poison, and molten copper being swallowed and poured. Therefore, all the tathāgatas of the ten directions characterize conceit as 'drinking water of folly.' Bodhisattvas regard conceit as something to avoid like drowning in a great abyss."
