Regarding various implements of suffering, resentment increases in body and mind, vexatious heat dwells in the chest, and the nature is not at peace; all of the above are subsumed under the fundamental afflictions. Mutually clashing and resisting, they knot together into vexatious heat; when vexatious heat does not cease, wrathful breath condenses into hardness, thereby provoking things such as metal and stone. 'Stake' refers to the post where criminals are tied. 'Castration' refers to two of the five penalties of the Qin. 'Decapitation, chopping, and mincing' are all capital punishments under the new law. 'Piercing' refers to tattooing of the ancient punishments, which is still found among exile penalties today. 'Pounding and beating' belong to the category of flogging and caning under the new law. Just as at the end of a kalpa, when humans give rise to fierce anger, the grasses and trees they hold all turn into knives and swords—is this not provoked by the inner mind!
