'Views' means evil views: inverted deductions regarding the principles of the truths, taking defiled discernment as their nature, able to obstruct good views, and taking the bringing about of suffering as their function. The phenomenal aspects of these views have five distinctions: first, the view of selfhood, clinging to self and what belongs to self; second, extreme views, clinging to annihilationism or eternalism; third, false views, slandering the non-existence of cause and effect; fourth, attachment to views, which means clinging to various views and the aggregates upon which they depend as supreme and able to attain purity, taking the basis of all disputation as its function; fifth, attachment to precepts and vows, which means clinging to following various views, precepts, vows, and the aggregates upon which they depend as supreme and able to attain purity, taking the basis of useless weariness and suffering as its function. In these habits of views, each person clings to their own understanding and mutually criticizes the other as right or wrong; hence they provoke events such as royal envoys and presiding officials. 'Deceptive contrivance' means setting up expedients to elicit feelings. 'Illumination' means citing other matters to verify and corroborate.
