"First, hearing opened: one hears all manner of clamour, and the spirit is dazed and disordered. Second, hearing closed: silently there is nothing heard, and the subtle soul sinks down. As these waves of hearing flow into hearing, they can become reprimands and cross-examinations; flowing into sight, they can become thunder, roaring, and noxious poisonous fumes; flowing into the breath, they can become rain and mist, showering toxic insects all over the body; flowing into taste, they can become pus, blood, and all sorts of filthy defilements; flowing into touch, they can become beasts, ghosts, faeces, and urine; flowing into the mind, they can become lightning and hail, crushing and shattering the mind and soul."
