'Exceedingly petty and inferior': 'exceedingly' (殊) means extraordinarily, that is, extraordinarily petty and inferior. When māras and ghosts are compared, māras are superior while ghosts are inferior. Now Mātaṅgī was a human, possessing only the power of a spell and not endowed with the five penetrations; compared to māra, she is the petty and inferior among the petty and inferior. From 'she merely' onward explains the character of being petty and inferior. According to this, Mātaṅgī's intended mind was very shallow; she only wished to violate your single precept of sexual misconduct. Because you had no such mind, it did not even constitute a violation. From 'this [māra]' onward reveals māra's superiority. 'This' refers to this māra. Māra wishes to make your samādhi fail, leaving you to drift in transmigration, causing your Dharma-body and life of wisdom to be extinguished and wiped out, just like the family of a chief minister violating the supreme laws of the state, having their registration confiscated and struck out, with no livelihood in the world: it is deeply pitiable indeed.
