9.286

愚者修禪皆墮此見，竝是魔種。不識如來像、教之意，且末世住持依因像、教，出家學道藉此而修。魔壞信因，令毀經像。故《楞伽》云「佛若不說，教則滅壞。教若滅壞，誰有修行及得道者？」愚者不見此文，一向謗佛無說，故知若不說法，十二部經於茲滅矣。須知毀經像人魔鬼入心，是大邪見。當須善察，勿同此謗。

Foolish practitioners of dhyāna all fall into this view; these are all the seeds of demons. They do not know the purpose of the Tathāgata's images and teachings. Furthermore, the maintenance [of the Dharma] in the degenerate age relies on images and teachings, and those who renounce the household to learn the Path depend on these for their practice. Demons destroy the causes of faith and cause them to ruin scriptures and images. Therefore the Laṅkāvatāra says: 'If the Buddha did not teach, the teachings would perish. If the teachings perished, who would practice and attain the Path?' Fools do not see this passage and slander the Buddha across the board as having taught nothing. Thus we know that if he did not preach the Dharma, the twelve divisions of scriptures would perish here. One must know that people who destroy scriptures and images have demons and ghosts entered into their minds; this is a great deviant view. One must examine it well and not join in this slander.
