9.363

「爾時天魔候得其便，飛精附人，口說經法，其人本不覺知魔著，亦言自得無上涅槃，來彼求陰善男子處，敷座說法。令其聽人各知本業，或於其處語一人言：『汝今未死，已作畜生。』勅使一人於後蹋尾，頓令其人起不能得，於是一眾傾心欽伏。有人起心，已知其肇，佛律儀外重加精苦，誹謗比丘，罵詈徒眾，訐露人事，不避譏嫌。」

"At that time, the heavenly demon, waiting to seize the opportunity, flies its essence to possess a person, who preaches the sūtras and Dharma with his mouth. That person originally does not realize that a demon has possessed him, and also claims that he has personally attained unsurpassable nirvāṇa. He comes to the place of that good man who is seeking shade, arranges a seat, and preaches the Dharma. He causes his listeners to each know their past karma; or, in that place, he says to a person: 'You are not yet dead, but you have already become an animal.' He commands someone to step on his tail from behind, instantly making that person unable to stand up, whereupon the whole assembly bows in mind with admiration and submission. If someone has a thought arise, he already knows its inception; outside the Buddha's vinaya rules he adds further bitter austerities, slandering bhikṣus, reviling disciples, and exposing people's private affairs without shunning ridicule or suspicion."
