夫宿命等通，禪者自有，離欲靜慮，任運現前。若起念先求，無功強取，非唯喪本，亦乃成魔。

Supernormal powers such as knowledge of past lives naturally belong to meditators; when they abandon desire and quiet their contemplation, these manifest spontaneously. If one raises a thought to seek them beforehand and forcibly grasps them without real merit, not only does one lose the root, but one also turns into a demon.
