"At that time, the heavenly demon, waiting to seize the opportunity, flies its essence to possess a person, who preaches the sūtras and Dharma with his mouth. That person does not realize at all that a demon has possessed him, and also claims that he has personally attained unsurpassable nirvāṇa. He comes to the place of that good man who is seeking knowledge, arranges a seat, and preaches the Dharma. For no reason, this person obtains a great precious pearl at the place of preaching the Dharma; or sometimes the demon transforms into an animal holding in its mouth that pearl, various rare treasures, bamboo slips, tallies, registers, and various strange objects, first giving them to that person and later possessing his body; or he entices listeners and hides underground, where a bright-moon pearl illuminates the place, causing all the listeners to obtain what they had never had before. He eats mostly medicinal herbs and does not consume fine foods, or sometimes eats just one sesame seed and one grain of wheat a day, yet his form is plump and full because the demonic power sustains him. He slanders bhikṣus, reviles disciples, and does not shun ridicule or suspicion."
