Question: From the beginning of this sūtra up to this point, light has been emitted four times; why is it that only in the present passage do all Buddhas emit light together, and furthermore speak together? What is so extraordinary about this? Answer: The first was to preach the teaching and refute heterodoxy; the second was to eliminate the false and reveal the principle; the third was to settle view and generate wisdom; the present one is to enter contemplation and fulfill practice. The former three produced understanding based on the teaching, but were not yet able to eliminate obscurations; the present passage fulfills contemplation and smashes delusion, directly stirring avidyā to enter the principle of the dharmadhātu. Therefore all Buddhas emit light, uniformly indicating that the substance of untying knots has no two origins. Thus we know that preaching the teaching to refute heterodoxy, revealing reality and eliminating the false, and establishing faith to achieve understanding were all for the sake of today's fulfillment of practice and attainment of realization; this is no trivial matter, which is why it differs from the earlier passages.
