The state where hearing is exhausted takes the wisdom of contemplation as its essence, and is named 'awareness.' This wisdom of awareness belongs to the sixth consciousness; it means letting go of hearing and contemplating the meaning. Now, also not abiding in this state of exhausted hearing, one advances further in the practice of contemplation, contemplating and dismantling this awareness and the hearing that is aware of it, so that neither stands; hence it is called 'empty.' This eliminates the wisdom of contemplation; this is what the previous text meant by 'the nature of emptiness becomes perfectly luminous, achieving liberation of dharmas.' The *Sūtra of Complete Enlightenment* says: 'Leaving far behind is also illusory, and must also be left far behind.'
