Second, from "At that time, the World-Honoured One, out of pity" onward is the dhāraṇī for destroying evil karma. This comprises three parts: first, the Tathāgata invites again; second, Avalokiteśvara speaks upon receiving the command; third, the Buddha affirms and ratifies it. Here, when it says the Buddha invites, it is not an invitation for himself; it is simply protecting the Dharma for others. The character qing ("invite/request") has two pronunciations: if read as a term for cleaning/purifying (jing), it can apply to inferiors, like an emperor summoning his officials. Moreover, in the sūtra title it is called jing, which can apply to ordinary inferiors; if read as qing ("request"), it is weighty. One may weigh and harmonize the two readings as appropriate. Now, the intention of re-speaking the dhāraṇī for dispelling and subduing poisonous harms is stated from the general perspective. Calling it the dhāraṇī for destroying evil karma receives its designation from the specific perspective. As before (and so forth).
