1.27

「大乘為教相」者，包含曰大，運載曰乘，教則聖人被下之言，相則分別同異。雖部談四教，而三教大乘為其正意。

"The Mahāyāna constitutes the pedagogical characteristics": containing [all things] is called "great" (mahā); carrying [sentient beings] is called "vehicle" (yāna). "Teaching" refers to the sage's words addressed to those below; "characteristics" refers to discriminating similarities and differences. Although this division of scripture addresses the four teachings, the Mahāyāna of the three teachings is its primary purport.
