1.48

「各說身因」者，《涅槃》三十二云「五百比丘問身子云：『佛說身因，何者是耶？』身子答云：『汝等亦各得正解脫，自應知之。何緣方更作如是問？』有比丘言：『我等未得正解脫時，意謂無明即是身因。作是觀時，得阿羅漢果。』有說愛、有說行，乃至飲食五欲。如是五百共往佛所，各說已解。身子白佛：『誰為正說？』佛言：『無非正說。』」

"Each explained the cause of the body": Chapter 32 of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states: "Five hundred monks asked Śāriputra: 'The Buddha spoke of the cause of the body; what is it?' Śāriputra replied: 'Each of you has also attained right liberation and should naturally know this yourselves. For what reason do you further ask this question?' A monk said: 'When we had not yet attained right liberation, our mind considered ignorance to be the cause of the body. When practicing this contemplation, we attained the fruit of arhatship.' Some spoke of craving, some spoke of action, up to food and drink and the five desires. Thus the five hundred went together to the Buddha's place, each having explained their own understanding. Śāriputra addressed the Buddha: 'Who has spoken correctly?' The Buddha said: 'None is not a correct explanation.'"
