1.72

「故經」下，引證也。《維摩經》身子問天女云：「汝於三乘為何志求？」天曰：「以聲聞法化眾生故，我為聲聞。以緣覺法化眾生故，我為辟支佛。以大悲化眾生故，我為大乘。」觀音、天女俱分真故，故得引證。

On "therefore the sūtra": this cites a proof. In the Vimalakīrti-sūtra, Śāriputra asks the devī: "Among the three vehicles, which do you aspire to and seek?" The devī says: "Because I transform sentient beings with the Dharma of the śrāvakas, I am a śrāvaka. Because I transform sentient beings with the Dharma of the pratyekabuddhas, I am a pratyekabuddha. Because I transform sentient beings with great compassion, I belong to the Great Vehicle." Since Avalokiteśvara and the devī both belong to the stage of partial realization of reality, this can be cited as proof.
