The sūtra's "from the past to fears" clarifies that effects arise from causes. "All sufferings" refers to suffering effects such as famine. If stimulated by the past, they become retributions to be experienced in the next life or in subsequent lives; if stimulated by present evil, they become retributions to be experienced in the present life. The sūtra's "like fire burning firewood": the Nirvāṇa explains that a small amount of good can eliminate great evil, just as a small fire can burn everything. The sūtra's "fears of the three poisons and so forth": these are the afflictions of equal parts, which, together with the above, make four parts.
