"Conferring the rank and so forth": the Avataṃsaka says, "When a wheel-turning sage king begets a crown prince whose mother is the primary queen and whose physical marks are fully complete, the king has the prince sit upon a precious, wondrous gold throne on a white elephant, spreads out a great net and curtains, and even plays various kinds of music; he takes water from the oceans of the four directions, places it in a golden vase, and holding this vase, pours it over the prince's head. At that time, it is named receiving the royal rank." "The Ten Stages states" refers to the "Ten Stages Chapter" of the Avataṃsaka explaining the tenth stage, the Cloud of Dharma. Thus the sūtra states, "When a bodhisattva receives the rank, it is also like this: because the wisdom water of all Buddhas is poured over his head, he is called a bodhisattva who has received the rank of great wisdom." This means that only the Cloud of Dharma stage attains the name of a consecrated bodhisattva. "The Buddha is solely dharmatā": because he ultimately manifests principle, the lower stages cannot see him. "The extremity of principle cannot be conceived": this explains that the ten kinds of persons possess a summit of wisdom that can be seen. Because they are limited to what they themselves have understood, they cannot conceive the ultimate extremity of principle. This means each takes a partial wisdom as the summit. From "If one attains" onward: advancing in practice upon receiving the teaching is like receiving consecration and rank. "Able to... and so forth": this means that the wondrously enlightened Avalokiteśvara uses the ocean water of dharmatā to universally consecrate the summits of wisdom of the ten kinds of practitioners. "This is the summit of the ten stages": this clarifies that when the sūtra speaks of consecration, it directly concerns the ten stages. If it even consecrates the ten stages, the lower stages can be known.
