As for the second, explaining the body of the Bhagavān, there are three meanings: first, the reward body; second, the transformation body; third, the Dharma body. The first, the reward body, preaches the Dharma for bodhisattvas on the stages. The second, the transformation body, preaches the Dharma for persons of the two vehicles. As for the third, the Dharma body, the Dharma body is ever-quiescent, benefiting oneself and benefiting others. Although there are three different kinds, as seen they are not different. The difference is like a śrāvaka seeing a sixteen-foot body, a bodhisattva seeing a boundless body, and the buddhas seeing the body of reality-nature: just as a single rope gives rise to three aspects—where the dim-sighted take it to be a snake, those with clear eyes see the rope, and the wise upon close examination see only hemp—the reward, transformation, and Dharma bodies are also just like this. If taken comprehensively, the three are one, and the one is three. If taken analytically, the three are not three, and the one is not one. Just as water, ice, and waves are three different things, yet water is ice and water is water, outside of water there are no waves, and outside of waves there is no water; the reward, transformation, and Dharma bodies are also just like this. This concludes the second [section], explaining the body of the Bhagavān.
